Important announcement for teachers in England!

Teachers in England may be aware of conflicting information regarding re-opening of dance studios. Currently the government guidance for dance studios is to remain closed under their “Closing certain businesses and venues in England” (updated 3 July 2020 by the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government)

As part of step 3, all businesses and venues can reopen from 4 July, except for the list below, which will remain closed in law or will be required to close in law:

  • Indoor fitness and dance studios
  • Indoor gyms and sports courts and facilities”

Although community centres have been given permission to re-open it does not mean that we can go back to teaching as the “Guidance for the safe use of multi purpose community facilities” (published 30 June 2020 by the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government) clearly states

“Indoor community facilities should also not permit sports activities that would typically take place in a gym, sports venue, or a fitness or dancing studio – these venues have not yet been permitted to open.”

Conflicting advice comes from “Guidance for parents and carers of children attending out of school settings during the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak” (published 1 July 2020 by the Department for Education) citing ballet as an exemplar of an accepted activity that can take part as part of the out of school settings provision,

“Children will be able to attend settings such as tuition and learning centres, extracurricular clubs (such as ballet classes, gymnastics training, football coaching), uniformed youth organisations (such as Scouts and Guides), supplementary schools, private language schools and religious settings offering education (for example madrassahs, yeshivas, and Sunday schools).”

UKAdance, along with the other dance awarding bodies/associations are seeking urgent clarification on this matter. We are all keen to get back to teaching. We will provide an update as soon as we can.

Keep well!            Keep safe!             Keep dancing!
